Medicare eligibility
Are You Eligible for Medicare?
Most people become eligible for Medicare at age 65 if they meet U.S. citizenship or residency requirements. Some people may qualify earlier due to a disability, End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD), or ALS.
You may be eligible if:
- You are 65 or older and meet Medicare’s citizenship or residency requirements.
- You are under 65 and have received qualifying disability benefits.
- You have ALS, which can qualify you for Medicare when disability benefits begin.
- You have End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) and meet Medicare’s specific eligibility requirements.
Enrollment can vary based on your situation. Some people are enrolled automatically, while others need to sign up. Your current employment, Social Security benefits, and existing health coverage can all affect when you should enroll.
Explore Your Medicare Coverage Options
Medicare coverage isn’t one-size-fits-all. Depending on your healthcare needs, prescriptions, budget, and preferred providers, additional coverage options may help fill gaps or provide added benefits.
Medicare Advantage
Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans are offered by Medicare-approved private insurance companies as an alternative to Original Medicare. Plans include Part A and Part B, and many also include prescription drug coverage and additional benefits.
Medicare Supplement (Medigap)
Medicare Supplement insurance works alongside Original Medicare and can help pay certain out-of-pocket costs, such as copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles.
Prescription Drug Plans
Medicare Part D plans help cover prescription medications. Stand-alone Part D coverage is available to people with Original Medicare, while many Medicare Advantage plans include drug coverag
